On workplace stress

Stress caused by an unhealthy or toxic workplace can all too easily be normalized.

⏱ You may think that this is just temporary, and you just need to get through this period.

📈 You may suck it up, as it's just what you need to do to get ahead.

📅 Changes may have crept up on you over time, and you don't realise that your role is unrecognisable compared to before.

This can have serious effects on all aspects of your life. As I once said in a training session, having confidence and resilience in the workplace is not about preparing a great sales presentation, but about sleeping well at night.

When stress creeps up on you, it's important to have something or someone external to help you spot it.

👫 It can be a loved one of a friend that knows you, and spots a change in you. It's important to listen when you get these messages.

👨‍🏫 It can be a therapist or coach that you can be open about. Good professionals can tease the problem out of you.

⌚ It can be a gadget like a fitness tracker or a smart ring. My personal health metrics over the last year show a different & healthier person since I changed jobs, and now I'm religious about keeping an eye on them.

The main thing is to find the feedback mechanism that works for you, and hold yourself accountable when you get the warnings.
